A free kitchen extension planner for UK homes
It's hard to picture a new kitchen extension from a drawing. Design My Rooms lets you change the measurements and see the room straight away, in 3D and as a top-down floor plan. You don't need to sign up or install anything.
How to plan your extension with Design My Rooms
Step 1
Set your room size
Enter the internal width and depth in metres. The example starts at 6.0 × 4.84 m, a common size for a UK rear extension.
Step 2
Add your bifold doors and entrance
Set the bifold width on the garden wall, then choose which wall you walk in through, where the doorway sits and how wide it is (762 mm by default).
Step 3
Lay out the kitchen
Adjust the back-wall and side runs, choose whether the L-shape starts on your left or right as you walk in, and size the island.
Step 4
Pick finishes and features
Try shaker or slab doors, cabinet and island colours, worktops and flooring, and switch on a pantry, American fridge-freezer, rooflight, utility stack, seating, dining table or sofa.
Step 5
Check the clearances
Design My Rooms shows the approximate gaps around your island and gently warns if a walkway drops below about 0.9 m or something blocks the way in.
Step 6
Share it with your builder
Download the floor plan, or print or copy a builder's design brief with sizes in millimetres, a finish schedule and a list of things to check on site.
How much space to leave around a kitchen island
A gap of around 1.0–1.2 m between an island and the surrounding units is commonly suggested, and about 0.9 m is a typical minimum for a walkway. Design My Rooms measures these gaps as you change the island and runs, so you can see quickly whether a bigger island will feel cramped. These are rules of thumb, not regulations.
